It's an object component model, a bit like corba but a lot simpler as far as
i understand it. A bit more like a light-weight ABI for objects/components.

For in-process same-thread COM calls (which is I think all that XP-COM does)
the calling overhead is the same as a virtual function call (in C++ it _is_
a virtual function call). So there would be little or no additional time
overhead compared to the current TokenStream situation. Space-wise COM is
going to be a bit more expensive than plain C++ but I can't see it being an
issue in the proposed case.
