This was also one of the things that struck me when starting hacking on
antlr. Internally it's a bit of a mess. The fact that there's no separation
between antlr and it's java runtime is also a PITA.

I think that for antlr 3 or maybe for 2.8 we already should try to clean
parts of this up.

PS Currently a little bit less swamped.. but have to do a talk next
week which will probably be about antlr, though so not so much time to do
hacking, but I'll try to do some things in between..)
