We are discussing rules that are to be used to specify patterns for
matching a part, segment, or fragment of lexical tokens. The complete
lexical token is perhaps not "built" but "assembled" from these
pieces, morsels, tidbits, smidgens, bits or fragments. ;-)
Lubos mentioned sublexeme in a later post in the thread. I liked that
actually but, very few lexical tokens have lexemes - usually only
identifiers and literals. The rules only occasionally define a
sublexeme. What they really define is a fragment of the input that
matches a lexical token.
I still like "fragment" best but, "smidgen" is so HarryPottery and
LordsOfTheRingish ;-)
