1.4 dates back to 2002. java.sun.com provides only 1.4.2 and 5.0 (nee
1.5) for download. IBM still supports a 1.3.1 download in addition to
1.4. SGI supports a range of downloads, from 1.1.18 to 1.4.1
It looks like anyone depending on pre-1.4 has already got
maintainability problems and they can only get worse.
1.4 is a good baseline. 1.5 still scares me because of the addition
of generics, but I have yet to investigate whether Sun avoided the
pitfalls that C++ ran into with standardizing templates before
standard practice had emerged.
