Don't discount "a bunch of arrows" so quickly; just because you can
throw away a convention doesn't mean you should.

Color is great, if you can see it.  Some of us don't see colors well,
so the diagrams really need to be useable without the colors.  In
addition, most (?) folks don't have color printers and/or copiers,
which means that any hard-copy will lose information.

That said, if the colors stay, please make sure that any text on top
of colors is high-contrast (think black on white, rather than red on
green).
