UTF-8 is the only sane UTF-?? standard there is. Unfortunately Java
came out just before UTF-8 took off, if memory serves, and so had a
solid UTF-16 entrenchment, in the early days. Now Java has solid UTF-8
support.
UTF-8 all the way! And if you want to read some solid (technically)
rounds on the whys and whatfors, go to the yaml.org mailing list
archives from ~2007 - 2008.
